The sunshine, warm weather, and outdoor activities can feel like a big relief following a cold, dreary winter. However, if you have psoriasis, summer can bring some unique challenges due to heat, sweat, sunburn, and skin sensitivity.
At North Pacific Dermatology & Aesthetics, dermatologist Kelly Kinsley, MD, understands how psoriasis can impact not just your skin, but your confidence and lifestyle.
Here are some tips to help you manage your psoriasis and enjoy summer to the fullest.
Moderate sun exposure can improve symptoms of psoriasis by slowing down skin cell turnover and reducing inflammation. However, too much sun can lead to sunburn, which often triggers flare-ups in people with psoriasis.
Dr. Kinsley recommends aiming for 10–15 minutes of sun exposure per day, ideally early in the morning or late in the afternoon. You should use a broad-spectrum, fragrance-free sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on unaffected areas. Always cover psoriasis plaques with clothing or apply a zinc-based barrier before applying sunscreen elsewhere.
Sweating is natural, but it can be irritating for psoriasis-prone skin. Sweat buildup, especially in areas like the scalp, underarms, and groin, can lead to increased itchiness and irritation.
Wear breathable, loose-fitting clothing made of natural fibers like cotton or bamboo in the summer months.
After sweating, shower or rinse off and gently pat your skin dry. Use non-irritating powders in your skin folds to absorb moisture without clogging pores.
Swimming can be soothing and beneficial. Saltwater may help reduce scaling, and chlorine pools can have mild anti-inflammatory effects, but they can also dry out your skin if you’re not careful.
To reduce any potential irritation from your water time, rinse off before and after swimming.
Apply a moisturizer or barrier cream before entering the water. After swimming, moisturize again to lock in hydration.
Summer sun and outdoor activities can dehydrate your skin quickly. Keeping your skin moisturized is key to managing psoriasis in any season.
Dr. Kinsley recommends applying a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer after every shower or swim. She can give you the names of brands that are right for you.
You should also hydrate from the inside out by drinking plenty of water throughout the day.
Increased alcohol intake, outdoor allergens, travel-related stress, and even some bug sprays can be sneaky summer psoriasis triggers.
Although it can be challenging, do your best to stick to your skincare routine all the time – even when traveling.
Choose natural insect repellents when possible; our office team can recommend brands for you. Limit alcohol and maintain your stress-reduction habits, such as yoga, mindfulness, or light exercise.
